FC Barcelona faces an important decision regarding their goalkeeper roster. Currently, the first team boasts three keepers: Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Wojciech Szczęsny, and Inaki Pena. The future of each player remains uncertain as the sporting director actively seeks a new shot-stopper. Among the potential candidates is Joan Garcia from Espanyol, who has long been linked to the club.
On paper, securing Garcia’s signature should not pose a significant hurdle. The Spanish goalkeeper’s release clause is set at approximately 25 million euros. However, this fee could rise to 30 million euros if he makes his debut for Spain during their June training camp.
Until recently, it appeared that Barcelona was nearly ready to finalise a deal for Garcia. Yet, fresh updates from El Nacional suggest otherwise. The situation took an unexpected turn as it emerged that Hansi Flick harbours serious reservations about the 24-year-old player. The coach has expressed doubts about Garcia’s lack of experience at the highest level. Furthermore, Flick believes the goalkeeper’s playing style does not align with Barcelona’s tactical philosophy.
Garcia is not Barcelona’s only target for the transfer window. Deco and Joan Laporta have identified additional options, placing Lucas Chavelier and Bart Verbruggen under consideration as potential alternatives.
